For a men’s size 10, would the XL still fit ok, though it starts at 10.5? Thinking about it being used on different types of footwear, especially on the chunky boot side.

This is actually a great question, and one that’s a little difficult to answer with 100% accuracy for you. If on the cusp between sizes, it does depend on which shoes will be worn. Sounds like you’d like to allow for chunkier hiking / snow boots, so you’re probably good to size up.
